NASCAR This Week ends operations today

It's been a hoot, but we gotta scoot.

NASCAR This Week is ending operations on Monday, December 6, and will go offline on Dec. 17.

While traffic to the site has continued to grow since April 2008 when we came online, NASCAR This Week failed to meet its financial expectations.

We’d like to thank Monte for his generous permission to feed all his stories to this site. We still believe he’s the best NASCAR journalist out there, and wonder if the NASCAR heat we got last summer was due more to Monte’s voice than the few bucks we were making off advertising.

Keep giving ‘em hell, Monte!

Monte will continue to cover NASCAR. You can find his stories on the NASCAR page at the Gaston Gazette where he works, as well as his blog, also located on the Gaston Gazette website. Monte also posts blogs on his personal MySpace page, and he also maintains a music MySpace page where you can hear his songs and find out where he’s performing next. He also has a page on Facebook.

We also want to thank all of you for stopping by over the past few years to catch Monte’s latest, join in the comment conversation or just enjoying some NASCAR octane.

Please leave us a message of farewell if you care to in the comments section below.

For the next couple of weeks we’ll leave up some of Monte’s best stories from the season. We think they offer ample evidence of why you should continue to follow Monte where you can. As we said, we think he’s the best around.

Here’s to great racin’ in the years to come!

NASCAR notebook: Edwards thinks Homestead is a new beginning

Carl Edwards, fastest in NASCAR Sprint Cup Series practice, was second-fastest in qualifying at Homestead-Miami Speedway. (photo: Getty Images)

HOMESTEAD, Fla. – Carl Edwards too has a reason to race, just one not so compelling.

Edwards is out of the Chase in terms of the championship but has fourth place, 47 points ahead of Roush Fenway teammate Matt Kenseth. And, of course, it’s Ford Championship Weekend, and Edwards drives one.

What Edwards talked about was “locking down fourth place.”

“That would be a big accomplishment for us, and we’ll just keep trucking,” he said. “I don’t feel like we have implemented all the things we’ve figured out yet. I think we have a lot of really positive things that they’re working on at the shop, so I think we could even be better yet come Daytona, Phoenix, Vegas (in 20100).

“I think we’re poised to be extremely good at the beginning of next season, maybe in a better situation than we were at the end of 2008, where I felt like we had been ahead and people were catching us.”

* * *

PITS CAN BE THE PITS–Pit choices could play a vital role in the outcome of both the race and the championship. Space is chosen on the basis of qualifying, which means Jimmie Johnson, who qualified sixth, has a much better location on pit road than Denny Hamlin, mainly because the point lead qualified 37th.

Johnson will pit at the midpoint, with an open spot in front of him. Kevin Harvick has a decent spot, behind the pole-winning car of Kasey Kahne and ahead of the No. 66 of Mike Bliss. Hamlin will pit near the pit entrance, behind Matt Kenseth and ahead of Aric Almirola.

* * *

NEW TASK AT HAND--Even though Johnson has won four straight championships, he’s never had to come from behind in the final race or, for that matter, the final two.

“In professional sports, things aren't always going to work out as you hope,” he said. “I wish we were leading the points and had the pressure of defending a championship down here, but I'm making the most of where we are.

“It's not far (15 points) from where we are to where Denny (Hamlin) is. We're going to have to go out and have a great day on Sunday afternoon, take it from there, see what happens.”

* * *

MOVE IT AROUND-- The third contender, Harvick, doesn’t want to see the Chase format change. He wants to see the Sprint Cup schedule change.

“I'd like to see a little bit more diversity in the race tracks,” he said. “I don't think the last 10 weeks should be the same tracks over and over and over again. I think it should rotate around. I think that would help particular race markets get better.

“You have it end at different places, have it start at different places. Maybe you go to some of the same tracks, but I think a different 10 weeks, even a road course at the end of the year, would put that full diversity, I guess you could say, on your champion to getting to all the different styles of tracks.”

Back before things got rotten

photo: Jim Hunter, NASCAR communications exec who died last Friday of cancer at age 71.

TALLADEGA, Ala. – It’s Halloween at Talladega, and neither Jim Hunter nor Ed Shull is here.

Where are the grown-ups going to get their tricks and treats? Beats me.

Kids live in a Halloween world in which one night of the year, they get apples and candied corn and Zagnuts and all kinds of stuff that cost a penny when I was a kid and now runs at least a quarter.

Grown-ups live in a Halloween world all the time, and guys like Hunter and Shull made it bearable, doling out jokes and smart-alecky remarks, all of which, on balance, were enjoyable. Both could, when necessary, spew what seemed like acid from their tongues, sort of like unto a velociraptor, but the taste left in your mouth was never worse than dark, semi-sweet chocolate. Both could also charm a cobra without need of a flute.

Hunter, who died Friday night, was titular. He always held positions of influence: vice president of this or that, president of Darlington Raceway. Hunter never got sent out to a pasture that would hold him long. He could wield power and influence whether occupying the crown or just telling the despot in training what to do in order to keep the rabble in check. In terms of public relations, Hunter was the equivalent of what Jake Gaither said about Bear Bryant: He could take his’uns and beat y’ourn or take y’ourn and beat his’uns. I’d have liked a “flack-off” between Hunter and Humpy Wheeler. There’s no way the National Stock Car Racing Commission could have judged the outcome. The Supreme Court would have had to flip a coin.

The two men, Hunter and Wheeler, once played football, at the same time, at the University of South Carolina, on teams that weren’t notably successful. That’s almost certainly coincidental, but one can’t help but wonder what the Gamecocks had in the water coolers on the sidelines back in the late 1950s.

Wheeler said, via one of dozens of statements circulated on Saturday and one of the few that meant anything other than to meet perceived obligations, “Jim Hunter will be sorely missed because he knew more about pure media relations, and particularly how it relates to the fan, than anyone in motor racing. He was best in crisis, always giving sage advice behind the scenes. He also knew when to interject humor when everyone was ready to crack.”

That’s a fact. Several times he talked to me when I was ready to crack.

Not as many knew Shull, who passed away earlier in the week. A pity. I only had lunch with Hunter once, back in those confused days before NASCAR wrote guys like me off. Hunter and I didn’t dine more often because he probably had a purpose in mind any time he dined. It was in Michigan, back in the 1990s, and Hunter got me together with Jim France, probably because he suspected I had an aversion to anyone with that last name, and he wanted to preserve the reputation of at least one member of the ruling family in my jaded mind.

In one way, it worked. I enjoyed it. In another way, it didn’t. I don’t think Jim France and I have exchanged a word since. I’d be shocked if he has any idea who I am. I do think the quiet member of the family has a lot of sense, which may have something to do with why he doesn’t often traffic in sportswriters.

Shull and I had dinner many times, not because there was any notable reason but more because we enjoyed each other’s company. A typical Shull confab might include yours truly, David Poole, Ray Cooper, Dan Zacharias and a few others, and it might take the form of meeting at (a.) a restaurant that hardly anyone other than us knew about, or (b.) a ballgame, usually involving a pass to one of the luxury suites Gatorade used to have in most of the country’s venues. Shull once invited me to the World Series, which I turned down because I thought my presence alone would contribute to the likelihood of a victory by the New York Yankees. I didn’t go and the Yankees didn’t win, so I’ve no regrets even though it’s probably the only chance I’m ever going to have at seeing the World Series, given this infernal world I’m in.

That was a different century, and in terms of what I do for a living and what Shull did, a different world.

A man in my shoes can’t afford to compromise himself, and that was never an issue with either Hunter or Shull. I hardly ever go to dinner or ballgames or concerts anymore with any “official” who invites me. Then again, hardly anyone ever invites me.

Everything nowadays has to be for a purpose. Influence the media. Affect the outcome. Target the market. Grease the skids. Stuff the ballots.

Most of my dealings with Hunter and Shull were because I liked them, and they liked me. They knew I was too stubborn to be influenced, and I’m pretty sure I told both of them, “Now, you realize, just to make sure there isn’t an issue, I’m going to have to rip you.”

It was a point I didn’t need to get across. I was mainly kidding. They both laughed. Now they’re gone. So are Poole and Cooper. And I don’t laugh quite as often.

Compressing Issue: Valenti Modified Racing Series Official Opens Up On Disqualification Of Ted Christopher

STAFFORD - Valenti Modified Racing Series motor inspector Bob Carrita said car owner Joe Brady tried to "blatantly bend the rules" with the car he entered into Friday's Lincoln Tech 80 at Stafford Motor Speedway.

Valenti Modified Racing Series officials took the unusual step of disqualifying Brady and his driver Ted Christopher prior to their car even getting on the track Friday at Stafford.

Portland?s LOSS is Milwaukee?s Gain...

So I know I?m the ONLY ?Juan who cares ?bout my Home track Portland International Raceway still getting STIFFED by IndyCar... What was that ?bout Randy ?The CandyMann? Bernard wanting to return to tradition? As in you?ve managed to give away Portland?s traditional Father?s Day weekend race date to the venerable Milwaukee Mile instead! And thus I won?t bother lamenting too much more over how it?ll be five years next summer since the last major Open Wheel Racing event was held at PIR, which NO! Doesn?t stand for Phoenix Int?l Raceway, albeit I?m not sure which ?Juan came first; Hya! (HINT: Can you say Valley of the Sun?)
May be IndyCar should stay away from the Northwest After all
Yet, interestingly? Phoenix?s ?lil Bullring Ovaltrack last held an ?INDYCAR? sanctioned race there in 2005, while Portland?s last gasp came with the much maligned ?N pummeled ?07 Champ Car World Series race, which your Humble Scribe endured all 3-days of, even having stayed thru the warbled tones of mighty Mazda Miata KillerBeez buzzing around the track and providing the backdrop for Robin Miller?s race recap...
And NO! I don?t wish to see Milwaukee fade away again, after apparently this year?s event was very poorly attended; Hmm? Sounds like the same song that?s been sung to me for years over Portland?s demise...
Milwaukee race in doubt
Yet, if Loudon can come back after a 13-year hiatus, I guess it?s still semi-feasible that Portland could once again host an Indy Car Series race, eh? Just please Mr. Bernard ? DON?T make us wait another nine years! Although I?m hearing Fontana, CA, Chicagoland, Road America and Houston Street race instead; URGH!

Maybe it?s a matter of winning, not losing

It’s a simple case of the Cinderella story versus the truth of who has the best damn car on the track.

AVONDALE, Ariz. – This Chase race is a bouncing ball. Each week. Back and forth.

Intangibles run rampant. Let’s see.

On Friday, Denny Hamlin was in breakout mode. His crew chief, Mike Ford, has supposedly gotten under the skin of Jimmie Johnson’s crew, which, by the way, wasn’t the same as it had been a week earlier.

On Monday, Johnson still trailed by 15 points, but it seemed as if it was time to get the cases of champagne ordered. Hamlin had played it a bit too safe by pitting near the end of the Kobalt Tools 500, apparently not realizing that most everyone else was going to try to conserve fuel and make it to the end, and more importantly, that most were going to succeed.

At Phoenix International Raceway, Hamlin snatched defeat from the jaws of victory, leaving him to wander aimlessly out of the track’s media center, muttering that he didn’t think he had done anything wrong.

Meanwhile, there was Kevin Harvick lurking, eyeing the two in front of him with the stare of a vulture waiting to snatch up the pieces.

But what if we stopped putting so much weight into the tangibles? What if the tangibles are really going to decide who wins this heated contest?

What if what happens just … happens?

If Johnson emerges next week as the champion, the prevailing view is going to be that Hamlin’s crew chief, Ford, spat on Superman’s (Johnson crew chief Chad Knaus) cape and got what was coming to him. If Hamlin wins it all, it’s going be because he kept a level head and didn’t let anyone get to him.

If Harvick wins, well, it’s going to require some alleged choking or bad luck by not one, but two. Thus will emerge the Cinderella story.

But maybe, just maybe, this championship is to be decided simply by which driver has the fastest car. Maybe no one’s going to choke. Maybe the attention should be justly slanted toward a tale of winning, not losing.

If so, few will notice. What’s between the ears trumps what’s under the hood.

The state of the art is messy

Jeff Burton wrecked at ‘Dega, and he wrecked again at Texas … (photo: Getty Images)

AVONDALE, Ariz. – Have at it, boys. Those words, spoken back in January by NASCAR’s Robin Pemberton, might as well have been the slogan of the season.

Oh, by the way, remember the Maine, the Alamo and Joe Hill, too.

Once, when I was in high school, our team paid a visit to a conference rival we’d beaten 62-0 the year before. That school normally wore orange, but when we trotted out on the field for warm-up, we immediately noticed the other team was wearing red and white T-shirts, matching our school colors. The T-shirts read:

WE REMEMBER! 62-0!

We remembered, too. We won, 34-6, and there weren’t any T-shirts the next year.

While pro football implements rules that limit the capacity of overgrown physical specimens to, uh, play football, NASCAR tumbles into old-fashioned laissez-faire.

If a driver doesn’t like the way another driver is racing him, he can just duke it out, by gosh. Unlike a beanball in baseball, NASCAR doesn’t eject or issue warnings, anything like that.

Have at it, boys. The three R’s are rubbin’, retaliatin’, and wreckin’.

The august ruling body must, of course, prevent an outbreak of anarchy. It can’t have these cocky, rich whippersnappers just rioting in the streets (uh, tracks). They can be scrapping among themselves all they want, but don’t be “sassing” a NASCAR official. Kyle Busch didn’t need words to “sass,” but he would have been no better off had he launched into a profanity-laced diatribe.

One reason modern racers can “have at it” is that they have few limitations.

In the old days, when a driver wrecked a car, he had to fix it, and if he didn’t fix it, he paid to have it fixed. Nowadays that’s the domain of millionaire owners with accompanying millions from sponsors. Now a dozen cars, just like the wrecked one used to be, sit back at the shop. They’ll send a transporter to pick another one up, if need be.

More than 20 years ago, Darrell Waltrip was kidding when he suggested that a car owner’s advice to a driver was, “If you can’t win the race, at least tear up the car.”

That’s no longer a joke. That’s the state of the art now.

LEMANS: 2011 24 Heurs du Mans Primer

Sounding like the proverbial Broken Record... It?s totally amazing to Mwah that its already time for the yearly running of the legendary Sports Car race, which to me always signals that half of the year has already slipped by; SHEISA! Not to mention that very shortly we here in the Northern Hemisphere will quickly have that dreaded day called Summer Solstice ? which means Daylight will henceforth begin receding... Which I don?t know ?bout Y?all; BUTT! Seeing how Seattle has just had its first two days of SUNNY, WARM weather last weekend, (6/4-5) when we finally broke the 70deg-f temperature barrier for the first time since September, 2010 ? a scant 9-months prier; Oh Never Mind, eh? As its pretty DAMN funny that I still DON?T know who won this year?s 12hrs of Sebring...
Thus it seems kinda funny that the ?Kuhnadiun Grand Prix will be occurring the same weekend, as I haven?t checked le Telescreen guide yet to see what?ll be what? Timewise that is; OH SHIT! This?ll be the first of the summer?s four BASTARDIZED FOX F1 broadcasts; SHEISA! Not to mention those riveting Twin 275k Ovaltrack IndyCar races in ?lil Texas Saturday night; which I guess is why ?Marky-Marc? (Marco Andretti) has been replaced in the No. 12 LMP1 Rebellion Lola/Toyota by Jerome Blekamolen, alongside last year?s teammates Neil Jani and Nicolas Prost; but I digress...
LEMANS: Wall to Wall coverage ?N more
And the usual ?Heavy Hitters? once again are back; this time with Audi running three of its newest R18 TDi variants vs. Peugeot?s dominating 908 turbocharged diesels, as Peugeot?s formidable ex-Formula 1 laden driver line-up?s return, with the nine ?French Lions? drivers remaining the same as last year?s runners. Plus for insurance, Oreca will once again campaign a ?Privateer? 908 with ex-Formula 1 ace Oliver Panis as part of the lineup.
AUDI unveils new R18 racecar               Peugeot?s New 908
And I?m somewhat disappointed by my ?Ol standby Planet Lemans Spotters guide this year, which used to feature a tiny thumbnail pic of each entries chassis... Although it appears this has been rectified for Mwah by SPEED?s Le Man correspondent John Davies who?s doing a Car-by-Car preview which you can peruse here:
GT Preview              LMP Preview
NOTESThus,  I wont try covering all of this year?s entrants, especially since Messer Davies has already done all of the heavy liftin? in his class previews. (See above) Yet I?ll toss out a few tidbits, as I was totally unaware that once again the GT category structure has been revised ? which makes sense, since the deletion of my favourite category GT1, as the bigger cars apparently fell outta favour? At least with the Manufacturer?s, eh? Thus there?s now just GTE, with the ?E standing for Evolouzione... With the class broken into Pro and Am divisions, i.e.; Pro = Professional and Am = Amateur.
And while I?m personally hoping that the No. 51 AF Corse Ferrari 458 Italia chauffeured by ?FishyFella, a.k.a. Giancarlo Fisichella, Gianmaria Bruni and Toni Vilander ? I?m MOST interested to see how their stable-mate? Mikey ?Aw Shucks? Waltrip does aboard his No. 71 Ferrari. DAMN! The life ?O a RASSCAR Team Owner & SPEED Talking Head, eh? Just hope he remembers ?Thar AIN?T NO Lucky Dog over there; Hya! Waltrip will co-drive with Rui Aguas and Robert Kauffman...
Once again Vanina Ickx is behind the wheel of a potent LMP1 Prototype, driving for Kronos Racing in the No. 22 Lola-Aston Martin.
Adrian Fernandez returns again with his crowd pleasing Aston Martin V-12 powered LMP1 Prototype with the Aston Martin ?Works? team, this time part of a two-car lineup. Fernandez will pilot the No. 009 AMR1 alongside Andy Meyrick and Harold Primat. While the No. 007 sister car features Darren Turner, Stefan Mucke and Christian Klien. Although I?d guess they?ll be hard pressed to beat the Audi?s and Peugeot?s...
Y?all can check it out on SPEED, who?ll be devoting major chunks ?O time Saturday/Sunday ? beginning at 5:30AM PACIFIC...

INDYCAR: Have You Bought A Ride Lately?

So I just had to shutdown Trackside with Kevin & Cavin, who once again seem to be wide of the mark over the supposed backlash over the Ryan Hunter-Reay insertion for Bruno Junqueira deal made to solely appease Andretti Autosport?s No. 28 primary sponsors DHL & Sundrop...
And I just finished discussing the Hypocrisy of ?Ol Super Tex belabouring the fact that he?s been payin? outta his own pocket all month for Junqueira... Hmm? Then why did Bruno publicly admit that this was the first time he?d been offered a paying ride to show up and drive at Indy? Yeah, I get it, the driver?s probably getting a mere pittance vs. the guaranteed finishing position of 33rd, but still don?t tell me how Yuhs had to pay to enter your second car if you went out and  hired somebody who legitimately made the show... Which for Mwah, has always been what Indy and Bump Day have been about, as there?s a reason I used to call it ?BOOMP DAY, when it was a SAD excuse for taking fans money and staging a variety Gong Show; Hmm? Wasn?t A.J. Foyt involved in a pathetic Tony Stewart last gasp Bump Day Melodrama?
Fortunately I do NOT drink soda pop, nor is Sundrop available in the Pacific Northwest, and I NEVER willingly choose to use DHL for package delivery?s ? so I WON?T haveda worry ?bout Boycotting them. (Hmm? Perhaps they?ll be buying Foyt?s AeroKit?s whenever they come up for grabs, eh?)
But, I?m just wunderin? ? wouldn?t it haveda been a lot cheaper for Jay Penske to have bought Bruno?s seat at Foyt for Scott Speed instead of having Patrick Carpentier thrown into the deep end ?N WAD up his second racecar? But A.J.; We?ll give Yuhs ALL of the FREE Fuzzy Zellar?s Premium Vodka you can drink!
And lastly, so does this mean Chip Ganassi can buy the winning racecar in Gasoline Alley in order to win the Greatest Spectacle in Racing? As I certainly didn?t agree with Bob Kravitz upon needing to keep Princess Perma Pout, but I?d say he?s definitely 100% ON target ?over his latest piece...
Kravitz: Foyt, Andretti should be ashamed of themselves

WMSC Decision to reinstate Bahrain leaves BAD taste...

Sorta like when you?ve got something stuck in your teeth ? but don?t have any toothpicks handy to dislodge the aggravating item...
As I find it absolutely INSANE that F1 really wants to return to this Kingdom anytime soon, especially this year ? as can the World Motor Sport Council really be so incredulously BLIND to what the current status of this Kingdom is? As I DON?T know the validity of this story posted on Joe Saward?s blogsite, but! If its even remotely true ? painting an overly CHILLING insight into the state of current affairs, then how in Damnations can Formula One afford to return to the site of such a CORRUPT Regime and put itself so firmly in the crosshairs of such Political upheaval and Governmental ATTROCITIES!
An article in The Independent in London
And even more bizarre yet, is the fact that none other then a one Mr. Max Mosley has become such a voice in the matter against the return to Bahrain, even potentially giving the FOTA/F1 Teams a way out by pointing out Article 66 of the FIA Sporting Code.
Mosley says teams have to agree date change
The irony of Mosley?s outspokenness is obviously his previous foray as Sir maXXum ? when he reputedly had a ?lil LUV tryst with some ladies of the evening playing some Nazi-theme Spanking games...
As I firmly believe this reinstatement is all Smoke ?N Mirrors, as in the fact that Uncle Bernaughty, Jean Todt and the FIA/WMSC are ALL trying to coyly cover their ARSES by forcing the Teams to rightly call OFF a return to this Kingdom which still clearly continues to abhor the Human Rights of its Citizens... (And NO! I DON?T believe for one second that the USA is a worthy Role Model!)
And Kudos to Mark Webber for his usual Straight Talk and willingness to be the only F1 driver to clearly speak his mind upon the matter...
Webber speaks out on Bahrain decision
And while I realize many people, i.e.; Constructors, Teams, Drivers, Personnel and Media may be contractually obligated to partake in said event if it does indeed occur, albeit ? isn?t it funny how quickly Uncle Bernaughty is once again Backpedaling? I hope that there?ll be enough of an outcry against this FARCE and NOBODY will participate; especially the Freelance Journalists who cover said sport.
As ALL I can do is pledge to NOT watch or Scribble ?bout the Bahrain GP if it does actually occur later this year along with signing the Petition below, which states:?To Red Bull, and other F1 teams: We call on you to declare publicly that you won?t race in Bahrain this year, because the government has killed and injured hundreds of innocent people who were standing up for their rights. Your reputation, and Formula 1?s, will suffer if you reward this deadly regime.?

As NOBODY seems to be mentioning the fact that a Trial against 47 Doctors, Nurses and Medical Professionals began yesterday with their offense being that they aided, took care and treated the physically injured Protester?s challenging the Government in Peaceful Demonstrations...
If you wish to have a say?

INDY LIGHTS: 2011 Primer...

Otay, I suppose I should leave this to Ryan the Expert ? of Junior Open Wheel Talent, albeit I?d originally intended to do a season preview, just ran outta time ? like always ? as this story, amongst a TON ?O ?UTTERS... Has been festerin? in the NFWHV; (NoFenderz WormHole Vortex...) a somewhat nebulous black hole that appears to be reminiscent of that other place  called the Bermuda Triangle ? NOT to be Cornfuzed with another Sand dial-ish instrument known fondly here as an I.U.T. ? another measurement ?O time, being a clever takeoff of the ?DAWG?s A.U.T. BUTT! I digress...
Nevertheless, I couldn?t resist, since after all this is where many aspiring drivers seeking to graduate to the INDYCAR BIG BOYZ? come from. And I really enjoyed my last FIL race, the ?09 Freedom 100. As we?re off to a good start with three different winners in the first three races...
Rd 1: Streets of St Pete, FL(March 27, 2011)Since your humble scribe was outta the country ? ?Down Under in OZ, I missed all coverage of the Road to Indy?s final stepping stone, a.k.a. the Firestone Indy Lights Championship. Where I believe 15-cars took part in the season opener? With first blood being drawn by Josef Newgarden winning his inaugural Indy Lights start at St Pete ahead of some Hotschue named Conor Daly... As Newgarden becomes only the ninth driver to win in his series debut...
Rd 2: Barber Motorsports Park, AL(April 10, 2011)Victor Garcia led Wire-to-Wire from the Pole to claim his inaugural Indy Lights victory over a tantalizingly close Stefan ?STORK JR.? Wilson by scant 0.312-seconds, with Peter Dempsey claiming his second consecutive Podium by finishing P3; whilst not so entertainingly for SSM team owner Sam Schmidt, his drivers Esteban Guerrieri and Josef Newgarden collided with each other early in the event and collected fellow teammate Victor Carbone In the aftermath, whilst fourth Hombre Conor Daly had a Dust-up with James Winslow ? making it a very long day for perennial FIL Powerhouse Sam Schmidt Motorsports...
Rd 3: Streets of Long Beach, CA(April 17, 2011)The weekend started off with Esteban Guerrieri capturing his second Pole position, while Peter Dempsey kept the Sam Schmidt Jugernaught from sweeping the first four grid slots by claiming the outside of Row-1, (P2) with Josef Newgarden and Conor Daly filling out Row-2 respectively.
Yet it was Daly?s countryman Dempsey passingGuerrieri for the lead on lap-1, only to throw it away by overcooking the entry into the Turn 8-9 complex, *which I believe is the second overtaking opportunity just prior to the signature Hairpin Turn-11...) giving the lead to Josef Newgarden, who?d demoted Guerrieri to third previously. Then the Argentine was passed by Daly into Turn-1 with a perfect overtaking move, thus moving into the runner-up slot whilst Sam Schmidt?s Boyz held down the top three positions. As Sam told Jake Query ? we just don?t want them taking out each other. (A la Barber Motorsports Park...)
Then the un-Tinkable occurred, as Newgarden effortlessly pulled away from the slip-slidin? Daly, with just 5-laps remaining, Newgarden suddenly overcooked his entrance into the same Turn 8-9 complex, later commenting he thought he?d caught the drainage ditch there? And wallah! Leader number two was off on the side of the road ? thereby gifting Noblesville, Indiana?s 19yr old Conor Daly his first Indy Lights win in just his third start, to which I thought I even, heard Conor saying over his radio: ?We?ll Take It Boyz!? SSM teammate Guerrieri was runner-up with Stefan ?STORK JR? Wilson taking the podium?s final step, albeit under some controversy from fourth place finisher; ?the Yak,? a.k.a. Gustavo Yacaman - ccalling foul upon the Englishman for using the run-off?s too many times...
Has Anybody Seen PDM Racing?Having had the good fortune of a very entertaining interview opportunity with Paul Diatlovich, who?s very high upon his latest charge MR ? As Obviously (SNAP! O-L-D My Name is IRL joke...) it?ll be interesting to witness reigning USAC National Champion Brian Clauson?s Baptism-under-Fire, as recipient of Indy Cars Road-to-Indy Scholarship program. Where the series will dole out 300-large ($300,000) for Clauson to contest all six Firestone Indy Lights Oval-track events this year, with his debut coming none other then at The Speedway...
No. 3) Victor Carbone; BrazilDon?t know anything ?bout this Dude ?cept he won the 2010 FF2000 Series Championship for Alegra Motorsports...
No. 7) Esteban Guerrieri; ArgentinaHeard this aspiring Argentine for the very first time after winning the Pole at Long Beach via Indycar.com?s webcast ? where Nick Yeoman interviewed him upon capturing his second Pole of the season. Ex scored his maiden Indy Lights Pole position at the season opener at St Pete and then followed it up with a second place start at the Barber?s, nee Barber Motorsports Park...
No. 11) Josef Newgarden; USAFirst heard of this dude when JOWT reported upon his winning the Kent class of the British Formula Ford Festival way back in 2008; then it seems Josef?s name was bantered ?round during the House ?O Windsor USF1 potential US-driver candidates... As somehow I?d forgotten that Newgarden went off to contest the GP3 series with Carlin Motorsports last year ? whilst I?ve just discovered he?s from Nashville, Tennessee; thus Geo-Phillips should be pullin? for him at Indy, eh?
No. 77) Road to Indy CarConor Daly; USA (Road courses/Street Circuits ONLY)I?m gonna pass upon scribblin? anything about the young Conor ? other then he appears to be a total ?STUD!? And I cannot help thinking how much he makes me think of his father Derek every time I hear him interviewed; as I haven?t looked yet to see how he faired in his GP3 debut in Istanbul ? where a very sharp-eyed Leigh Diffey spotted the elder Daly in the Pitlane during the GP2 action...
Wally Dallenbach, Jr.; USA (Edmonton ONLY)So my initial reaction to hearing this news live on Versus ? as Willy T. Ribbs was giving him grief for being an OLD man; saying Yuhs gotta takes what?s Yuhs getz! Was you?ve gotta be joking, right? As I can only surmise this is some sort of payback to ConversNBC (Catchy ?DAWG! Nee pressdog...) Err Versus?s airing?s of all FIL races in conjunction with it?s ?BigCarz broadcasts, eh? As when is the last time Wally drove a racecar? Or is this just another way to garner some schmoozy footage for that really pathetic jingle  Wally?s World??? Oh Never Mind! As hopefully the series will reap some benefits from potential Dallenbach exposure...
Bryan Clauson; USA (Ovals ONLY)I?ve only listened to Bryan on Autosport Radio, where he seemed pretty humble ?bout making his Indy Lights debut at NO less the Speedway?s Freedom 100 event on Carb Day this May... Thus I was unaware that Clauson was some Cat?s back-up/fill-in for Dario ?REO SPeedwagon? Franchitti on Chip Ganassi?s Nationwide No. 40 entry. Then Clauson moved to somebody nicknamed ?Smoke?s (Tony Stewart) Midget team to capture last year?s Midget Championship enroute to becoming USAC?s very first-ever National Champion... As Bryan will contest all six Indy Lights Oval races as  part of his award for winning the title last year, as Randy Bernard is hopeful of re-creating the Past linkage of USAC drivers competing at the Brickyard...
Team Moore Becomes Bridesmaid? This is the squad that rand the Mayor ?O Hinchtown last year ? finishing runner-up to J.K. Vernay and Sam Schmidt for the title, as it appears Garcia may be the better of the team?s two drivers?
No. 2) Gustavo Yacamn; ColumbiaThe ?Yak needs to quit yacking off ?bout his competitors and get busy racing, as it seems that Yacaman is getting a bit Long-in-the-Tooth as an aspiring Indy Lights driver, who?s now in his third(?) season without any major results to speak of...
No. 22) Victor Garcia; SpainAnother of the Plethora ?O ?Junior? Drivers I don?t know ?bout before hearing of his debutant Indy Lights victory at the Barber?s ahead of Stefan Wilson & Co. As I believe Garcia?s already accomplished something his ?senior? teammate hasn?t; can you say victory!
O2 Racing TechnologyDon?t know anything ?bout these Catz ? other then they seem to have a pretty good Irish driver behind the keyboards of one of their two racecars...
No. 36) Peter Dempsey; Republic of IrelandThe only thing I knew ?bout this Dude was I could swear he raced alongside John Edwards in the ALMS last year? (As apparently he was another driver looking for a Full-time ride...) As this Irishman has shone so far to date in the Indy Lights car, beginning the year with two back-to-back Podiums, both third places, whilst he appeared to be on his way to a possible victory at Long Beach? Unfortunately Dempsey threw it all away with an unforeseen error upon his part. Yet look for Dempsey to be at the ?sharp-end of the Pack? in regards to the rest of the season?s races...
JOWT: Exclusive Peter Dempsey Driver?s blog
Balardi Auto RacingA newcomer team to the FIL ranks which I know very little ?bout...
No. 9) Anders Krohn; NorwayYou haveda like some Dude with the Huevos to proudly enjoy calling himself ?The Viking,? which is exactly what Messer Krohn  has done. Don?t know how his season?s gone to date, but I LIKE IT!
Don?t Forget Mikey?s Team...Always a Front-runner, having captured multiple FIL Crowns in association with Gary Peterson?s AFS Racing concern, as I?d enjoy seeing the Red No. 5 in victory lane...
No. 5) Stefan Wilson; United KingdomNice ?Juan Stefan, as I believe that was somebody named BLOODY NIGE?s car number, eh? As STORK JR was fastest in the Freedom 100 practice session...
No. 26) James Winslow; United KingdomThis ?Bloke?s obviously got talent to match his speed, having won four Stepping-stone Championships between 2004-08, along with having driven briefly for Team GBR in the former A1 GP Series. He was also supposedly set to become a Champ Car driver in ?08 after having tested a DP01 at Sebring in ?07 ? before becoming another victim of the Mergification. James drove on the Road Courses/Street Circuits for Sam Schmidt in last year?s Indy Lights series before moving to Andretti Autosport this year, as it appears Winslow?s on the Ryan Hunter-Reay ?Rent-a-Race? plan and hopefully will continue past the first three races ? which was all he was confirmed for...
Davey Hamilton RacingHenry Clarke back? Whale, it appears not, albeit DHR is running past FIL winner Brandon Wagner again this May at Indianapolis, who was P12 during the Freedom 100 test session.
Yet I?m just somewhat intrigued by Messer Clarke since hearing him last year on Autosport Radio and confessing he?d taken up four wheel racing vs. his ?Scooterz two wheel regime after having broken way too many bones by the tender age of 17!
And there Yuhs have it, a somewhat brief(?) smattering of some of this year?s Flinstone Indy Lights talent ? along with some potential  Freedom 100 competitors, so check it out if you get a chance, eh? As we?re assured of having a new winner with last year?s victor and Pole-sitter both being off to the ?BigCarz ranks; as you can catch the race live in its entirety on Versus during Carb Day ? As I?m looking forward to watching the race in ?Living Colour!? (And NOT some PEECOCK colours Yuhs Hear?)

This year ? the Chase works

Chase contenders Denny Hamlin, Jimmy Johnson and Kevin Harvick during a Champions press conference on Friday. (Photo: Getty Images)

HOMESTEAD, Fla. – Let the best man win. Let the fastest car win. Here’s hoping they’re the same.

Grant the serenity not to have to muddy the Sprint Cup waters with leaking oil or litter them with debris. Here’s hoping no one’s title hopes run out of gas … literally.

Even though “ABC’s Wide World of Sports” is but a memory, it would be nostalgic to have the Ford 400 decided amid “the human drama of athletic competition.” What’s more important than who wins is how he wins it.

In an incredible development, given the slings and arrows of the Chase format, the three drivers who are still in contention – at Homestead-Miami Speedway, in the final race, with a 46-point blanket over them – are the three who deserve to be there.

If there were no Chase – and the points awarded in each race the same as now – Kevin Harvick would lead by 295 points. Of course, there is a Chase.

The driver with the most victories is Denny Hamlin.

The driver with four straight championships is Jimmie Johnson.

Chase or no Chase, they would be the top three now, though in different order. If the true goal of the Chase is to tighten, but not otherwise alter, the course of the season, then this Chase is the one that exemplifies the format. Even those who dislike the Chase – they’re out there – should be willing to concede that this is just about as good as the format, however flawed, gets.

If everything works out perfectly today, NASCAR will have a difficult time justifying further changes, even though NASCAR chairman Brian France has been floating trial balloons on the subject since July.

They’ll probably “tweak it” a little – France and his minions love that word – just to save face.

France was still pumping hot air – perhaps not quite as hot as before – into the balloon as recently as Friday.

The results of the current season, he said, demonstrate that “the more we can do, to have incentives ? an incentive basis -- to decide this championship, that puts it all on the line more often. That's what we need to be thinking about.”

Oh, yeah. “Take paradise and … put up a parking lot.”

?TAG KICKS ARSE!

WOW! Is all I can say ?bout Alex Tagliani?s ?Mega Throwdown upon the ?Bigboyz today ? capturing the Pole not once but twice! I mean, when is the last time you?ve ever seen NOT one but two Ganassi cars run otta fuel during their final qualifying runs, eh? And the top Penske in P5 isn?t your Dancin fool ?HULIO! Nor Ryan ?The Izod Dude? Briscoe... Hmm? Somehow I?m guessing that isn?t quite the type ?O exposure IZOD was banking on when switching allegiances? to The Captain; as really? The ?Twisty? guy Will Power was your top gun at Roger?s track...
And like Geo Phillips, I typically DON?T predict the outcome, although I know Y?all will be hard pressed to believe this; BUTT! I did originally choose TAG for Pole today ? too bad I didn?t call Vegas, right? As it?s really kOOL to see three Sam Schmidt cars in the Top-9, along with Sarah fisher and I?ll even go easy upon Mr. 4-OH Barnes ? having put HotRod back in a car, not to mention how ?bout that No. 2 Newman Haas Racing car...

What if they tried stability?

Jimmie Johnson – Underdog? What might that do for the popularity of NASCAR?

AVONDALE, Ariz. – Just what does Brian France want to change?

The NASCAR monarch – after all, stock car racing has a clearly defined royal family and order of succession: Bill I, Bill II, Brian I – thinks if times are bad, the only possible solution is change.

The Internet hasn’t changed as much in the last decade as NASCAR.

Why not wait on the fans for once, instead of asking them to adapt?

The Chase, which made finishing 12th as important as first (for 26 races), is in its best shape since 2004, when it debuted. Somehow, by the strangest quirk of fate, one race remains and Jimmie Johnson actually doesn’t have it sewn up.

Johnson, unbeatable and unloved, thinks winning it this year might actually decrease the number of fans who dislike him. He’s going into the final race without the lead. Could the specter of Johnson the … underdog … be raised?

“It would probably be received better than the ones in the past, with the runaway show we’ve had in a couple of them,” he said.

It’s worth a shot, yes?

Lead changes and exciting finishes are up. The flip side, of course, is that Dale Earnhardt Jr. is down.

NASCAR changed its grading system and put everyone on a curve – or maybe all the courses are strictly pass-or-fail – for 26 races. It made all the cars so close to identical that Johnson himself might not be able to tell a Ford from a Chevy without those handy headlight decals. It revved up the action with rules that make the old “racing back to the caution flag” seem safe. The number of laps aren’t even reliable anymore.

Some fans are ticked off. Some are just tired.

Maybe change has been transacted at so dizzying a pace that people just can’t keep up. And contradictions flourish.

With cars that look just alike, inexplicably, one manufacturer, Chevy, dominates as never before.

Exciting races are perceived widely as just the opposite. “Boring” is just a strange word to be used in relation to what has taken place on the tracks this year, but fans say it every day.

Every change is sold as cost-cutting, but none of the teams ever actually save any money because, before they get a chance to do so, more changes emerge from that godforsaken Research and Development Center.

Even change gets old when it never stops.

Edwards wins uneventful Sprint All-Star race

The race was billed as a throwback to the Wild West, and track officials practically promised scores would be settled in the $1 million Sprint All-Star Race. Only the knock 'em down action never came, and the only fireworks were those in Saturday night's post-race show at Charlotte Motor Speedway. ...

As I haveda say I was more impressed by Tagliani?s ?Humbleness? upon his ?Mega accomplishment of winning his first Indy 500 Pole ? plus the overwhelming support from all of his rival IndyCar drivers, especially Dixon?s classy congratulations afterwards, along with Dario being happy for his ex-Engineer; Hmm? Wunder if it was Castroneves who filler up?ed those Target cars? As somebody sent me a photo of ?HULIO pumpin? gas in Indy last week...

Vettel Magic Continues

The fourth event of the Formula One Grand Prix 2011 was hosted on Sunday, 8 May 2011. With Lewis Hamilton beating Sebastian Vettel during the Grand Prix in China, he was confident that he would be able to deliver another great performance during the Turkish Grand Prix held at Istanbul Park. But a disappointing pit stop put an end to Hamilton?s race for first position. Instead, Sebastian Vettel enjoyed a comfortable victory ? his third victory this season ? increasing his lead on the championship leadership board. But Vettel remains grounded and is not becoming overconfident.

Keeping the Mulford Conspiracy Alive...

THE 1911 INDY 500 WINNER? Ralph Mulford in 1923 (Source: New York Times)
Its somewhat Bemusing to me how this story seemingly won?t fade away, albeit I enjoyed the background upon Ralph Mulford?s two failed attempts as an Auto Manufacturer, since I?ve never heard ?bout the 1917 Mulford Roadster, which you can read about in;
From Racer in First Indy 500, a Roadster That Saved a City
Then if you wish to relive a quick rehash over the perceived controversy between whether Ray Haroun in the ?Throbbing Yellow Speed Monster,? a.k.a. Marmon Wasp or Ralph Mulford won the 1911 Indy 500 see;
