Tom Walkinshaw fades away...

Perhaps Y?all have heard that Tom Walkinshaw, the guiding force behind TWR (Tom Walkinshaw Racing) passed away on Sunday, December 12, 2010, at the tender age of 64yrs old ? having succumbed to his 3-year battle against Cancer...Tom Walkinshaw R.I.P. 1946-2010So, I?m not gonna try recapping his illustrious Motorsports career, which has been done all over the Blogosphere... But instead I?ll simply touch upon a few aspects of how I remember Messer Walkinshaw.I first became aware of Mister Walkinshaw during those heady Jaguar days ? when those iconic blue & white Bud Light XJR-Jaguar IMSA GTP Prototypes were carving up the Sports Cars landscape... As I seem to recall the North America?s lead driver being Davy Jones, along with Price Cobb... Although I?m certain there were many more - as Raul Bosel, Martin ?Billy Bob? Brundle and Arie Luyendyk most easily come to mind for me. Although I tend to remember something ?bout Derek Daly doin? 240mph+ on le Mulsanne Straight in those dominant Jaguar XJR-9?s... When the TWR-cars won the classic 24 Heurs du Mans twice, while gosh-gee-wilikers... I now seem to think someone name Eddie Cheever drove for The Cat too, eh?And I mostly saw The Cat?s at; Yep! You guessed it... Portland International Raceway, as they always put on a very good show, albeit I had a most enjoyable outing whilst once attending an IMSA GTP race in San Diego, CA. As a guest of an ex-Jaguar Test Driver, who took me to sleepy ?Ol Del Mar in a Jaguar XJS V-12 (making mincemeat of a Lincoln Mercury XKR-7? Who wanted to play with us...) to watch the super fast Bud Light twin turbo Jag?s dominate the field ?round the Del Mar Horsetrack grounds... As I can?t remember exactly what year this was, ?cept ?Gentleman John (Andretti) was driving a gold & white Miller Beer Porsche 962 ? which I?ve got pic?s of stashed awayz some where?s...Yet my favourite Jaguar was the menacing looking XJR-14 green Silk Cut World Sports Car (WSC) racecar ? which to me was most radical looking... A sorta Formula 1 racecar on Steroids, with the ubiquitous Airbox overheads of the extremely narrow cockpit surround. As I?d forgotten that that chassis was running a rebadged 3.5-liter normally aspirated Ford HB V-8, taken off of the 1990-91 Benetton-Ford?s lump, albeit slightly detuned in hopes of reliability concerns... As this was the era when Ford owned Jaguar and hence the Ford engine connection ? as the HB lump was quite competitive in Formula One during this time period...And although not directly concerning TWR, as Jaguar Racing F1 was born outta the Stewart Grand Prix concern, I?ll always chuckle to myself when recalling seeing ?Scooter, nee Scott Pruett sandwiched between those Jagg-U-war Boyz Mark ?Bicycles R-Us? Webber and Justin BIG UNIT Wilson; as Pruett was piloting a Bud Light Cat at Daytona that year...And while Walkinshaw was instrumental in Benetton?s rise to power as a Formula One Champion, most notably for bringing their Technical knowledge to the forefront; not to mention bringing Ross Brawn to the party... Yet for Mwah, Tom was best known for poaching a very young German by the name of Michael Schumacher from EJ, (Eddie Jordan) before ultimately falling out with Flavour Flav (Flavio Briatore) and buying the Arrows Grand Prix team...But sadly thru all of Walkinshaw?s accomplishments, my strongest memory of tom will always be the FUCK TOM! T-Shirts at the Nurburgring... Which I scribbled ?bout in my Nurburgring, 2002 Trip recap; as apparently Yuhs simply DON?T PISS OFF the Dutch ? Yuhs Here!European GP: Nurburgring ? June 21-23, 2002With evening having fallen, becoming dark outside, tired and feeling relaxed after the Bitburger?s; I fell asleep while Mary Ellen went out on her own; as she told me there were several drunks everywhere and that the Dutch seemed to be the rowdiest. She told me they were wearing T-Shirts that said: ?FUCK TOM!? What?s that all about? I just lay there laughing out loud? I explained how Tom Walkinshaw had just (let-go) fired Jos ?THE BOSS? Verstappen from Arrows... Replacing him with ?Heinz 57.? (Heinz Harald Frentzen) As apparently the Dutch are very loyal about their race drivers! As I still chuckle about this even now. It makes me very happy to see such devotion publicly displayed and as it turned out Walkinshaw was a total ?Wanker!?Nurburgring, 2002

THOMPSON - How do you properly define World Series of Speedway Racing Saturday at Thompson International Speedway?

Let us count the ways.
World Series Saturday means seeing a guy on the midway with a beer in his hand wearing overalls, gloves and a knit hat standing next to a guy with a beer in his hand wearing a t-shirt and shorts.

Ryan Preece Released From Whelen Modified Tour Boehler Racing Ride; Matt Hirschman Takes Over The Seat

There will be a new face in Ole Blue in 2011 on the Whelen Modified Tour.

Former Whelen Modified Tour regular and championship contender Matt Hirschman of Northampton, Pa. will replace Berlin's Ryan Preece in the familiar Boehler Racing Enterprises No. 3 car next season.
Hirschman has not competed full-time on the Whelen Modified Tour since finishing second to Ted Christopher in a tight points battle in 2008. Hirschman's father Tony won two of his five Whelen Modified Tour championship with the BRE in 1995 and 1996.

Who knows why the bubble burst?

The morning after the Amp Energy Juice 500 was as muddled as the race. It required a long drive home to get the old thoughts in order.

This race featured 87 lead changes. It ended in a side-by-side finish, though, oddly, not at the finish line. The last-place driver in the Chase for the Sprint Cup, Clint Bowyer, became the only driver so far to win two of its races. Of course, the reason Bowyer is buried so deeply is the absence of 150 points due to a NASCAR penalty.

See what I mean by muddled?

But what fired my ruminations was the question of declining interest in NASCAR. Many opinions have been offered, most by folks who, in some way, have a specific interest in the view they offer. Those who are having trouble economically blame the economy. Those who love Dale Earnhardt Jr. blame his struggles. Those who loathe Jimmie Johnson blame his dominance.

It can’t be contended that the sport hasn’t reacted. Ticket prices have been slashed. Rules have been changed to promote excitement. Nothing seems to work. The NASCAR estimate of the Talladega Superspeedway crowd was 110,000. In 2003, it was 170,000. Those who point out how convenient it is to watch on TV fail to account for why TV ratings are declining as rapidly as attendance.

I’ve pondered and addressed all these issues and offered a few of my own, but the truth is, I don’t know, either. And I don’t think NASCAR does.

One word occurred to me while driving the interstate: “bubble.”

In the stock market, there was a “dotcom bubble.” I’ve heard of mortgage bubbles, real-estate bubbles and Indy 500 qualifier who are “on the bubble.” The world is one big bubble bath.

The idea is that something grows too rapidly. The perception of prosperity creates something of a feeding frenzy. Everyone gets on board, so much so that growth is artificially enhanced in a way that can’t be maintained.

And the bubble bursts.

All that “Fastest Growing Sport” rhetoric, which NASCAR so enthusiastically circulated, may have burst. “Burst” may be too harsh a word. In the stock market, there is often a “fallback position.” Maybe that’s where NASCAR is right now. It’s still big, but not as big.

F1: 2010 Abu Dhabi GP ? Season Finale recap

Sebastian Vettel, Weltmesister!"Those were the words played over the television world feed uttered by Red Bull Racing Engineer Rocky Rocquelin ? As in Vettel?s race engineer... Upon proclaiming Sebastian as the 2010 World Champion ? the youngest World Champion in the sport?s history; at 23-years and 134-days young... Taking the record away from Lewis Hamilton, who?d previously usurped Fernando Alonso...As I still cannot believe that Master ?Zebb (Vettel) did IT!Having done BLOWN UP! Whilst leading the inaugural Korean GP, Vettel seemed a distant long-shot to Mwah, needing to win the final two races + have some help... As I, along with many ? were critical towards Red Bull?s decision to let Sebastian win at Interlagos, ahead of Webber ? who would have gone to Abu Dhabi one point behind Alonso, instead of the eight he started the day of the race upon Yas Isle, while Vettel began from Pole 15-markers adrift of rosso numero eight...Bright Lights to shine on Abu Dhabi season finaleRound 19 of 19(Yas Island, Abu Dhabi: (UAE) Nov 14, 2010)Top 3 QualifiersPole: Sebastian Vettel; Red Bull2nd: Lewis Hamilton; McLaren3rd: Fernando Alonso; FerrariOther Top 10 QualifiersP7) Rubens Barrichello; WilliamsP10) R- Vitaly Petrov; RenaultTop 3 FinishersWinner: Sebastian Vettel; Red Bull2nd: Lewis Hamilton; McLaren3rd: Jenson Button; McLarenOther Point ScorersP5) Robert Kubica; RenaultP6) R- Vitaly Petrov; RenaultP9) Jaime Alguersuari; Scuderia Toro RossoRace Drive of Abu DhabiWhale obviously this could easily go to Master ?Zebb, (Vettel) but I?m giving it to the Rookie ?Rooskie instead... As Renault?s Vitaly Petrov whose reportedly fighting for his job in F1 drove a masterful race, his finest ever ? to date, by holding off Fredrico Suave, nee Fred Alonso for nearly 40-laps, as the Scuderia Ferrari Piloto was simply unable to pass Petrov, who not only had Ferdi-the-Putz filling his mirrors, but Mark Webber?s Red Bull nipping at Alonso?s heels the entire race as the two Championship hopefuls finished behind Vitaly! Whilst Ferdi further cemented his Moniker by reputedly wildly gesticulating to Vitaly that he was Number One immediately afterwards; but I?m happy to hear that Vitaly told Ferdi he?s Numero Uno back!McLarenAlthough the Woking Boyz finished on the Podium, albeit the second and third steps ? I?d say they were never really in it, even though ?Louise ?JAGUAR? (Hamilton) pressured Vettel for the lead in the beginning, before effectively burning up his tyres... As I seem to recall a Radio transmission saying he needed tyres? NEGATIVE Lewis ? you?ll haveda stay out. (Or was that Interlagos?) And then Louise claimed he couldn?t do a BLOODY thing to get around The Krakow Kid. (Kubica) thus motoring home runner-up.Meanwhile ?JENSE, who started directly behind Lewis; Hmm? Having been battling with Bosom Buddy ?Rubino and then teammate Nico on the opening lap, Herr Schumacher applied a tad bit too much throttle and ended up looping his ?Merc straight into the path of the oncoming luckless Vitantonio Liuzzi ? who almost gave Michael a haircut... As Tonio?s Force India lurched over the stricken Mercedes! Before the two Gran Primo Piloto?s walked away laughing...Interestingly, Nico who?d been On-fire in the first two ?Qualie sessions before dropping down the Timesheets ? one place behind Schuey... Had used up his allotment of prime rubber, having to use the options instead for the start of the race ? immediately dipped into Pitlane during Michael?s Safety Car period to go back onto the preferred prime?s and then simply marched forward as everybody else needed to pit. Ultimately finishing fourth on a track nearly impossible to pass upon...So did Michael really spend his free time in the Mercedes Motorhome doctoring Britany?s passport?Michael Schumacher guilty as charged! No. 3) M. As I NEVER even remotely thought he had a chance at grabbing the title away from Ferdi ? so I guess good things really do happen to those who deserve it, right? While Mark ?80-grit? Webber seemed to finally crack(?) from the pressure of claiming his debutant Driver?s Crown... Qualifying a flatfooted fifth; behind all four of his title rivals... then clipping the wall with his rear tyre, he pitted for new rubber in a move the Scuderia Boyz copied which saw both drivers hopelessly trapped behind ?Rooskie Petrov to the chequered flag! In what turned out to be the year of points leader?s defaulting in the Season Finale?s, i.e.; will Power and Denny Hamlin to name just two...And what more can I say then Viva le Reggie! As in How ?bout those Renault Boyz, eh? As in when was the last time that a Double World Champion could NOT find his way around a rookie driver in a Midpack Renault... As it was absolutely beautiful watching Ferdi bottled up behind Vitaly...While I also noticed how the ?No. 2? drivers at McLaren, Red bull & Ferrari; sadly Felipe Massa has slipped into this category, all dutifully ? somewhat, started behind their teammates. As Felipe also fell fowl to the tyre changing game and ultimately wound-up taking the race?s final point in tenth...No. 7) F. Massa: Q) 6th; R) 10thNo. 8) F. Alonso: Q) 3rd; R) 7thName; Q-RMassa 4-5Alonso 15-14LotusWhile according to ?KOVY (Heikke Kovalainen) he had a trouble free run home to 17th place, the same can?t be said for the somewhat ?Scrumptious ?Juan, nee Jarno Trulli, who first had trouble with his front wing and then later on suffered a rear wing failure... Which has to be a tad bit worrisome, eh? Yet the team finished as Numero Uno of the Newboyz Team?s this season and thus I?d certainly like to see an Youtube video of Sir Richard Branson paying off the side bet with protg Tony Fernandes... when Sir Richie Rich spends the day ?Schlepping as a Flight Stewardess aboard one of Fernandes?s Air Asia flights... NO! I?ll stick to the tea instead of you Mr. Branson! No. 18) J. Trulli: Q) 19th; R) 21st (-4 laps; Rear Wing failure)No. 19) H. Kovalainen: Q) 20th; R) 17th (-1 lap)Name; Q-RTrulli 11-5Kovalainen 8-14HispaniaThe little team that COULD! As this has to be the smallest budgeted team on the grid? Especially since going with a cobbled together Dallara-designed chassis the entire season, which saw Bruno get into hot water for claiming ?bout chassis updates that he?d gotten a new Rolex! Hmm? That isn?t inscribe to Uncle Bernaughty on the back is it? (Hya!)And both drivers thanked the team, which makes me momentarily think they?re saying their goodbye?s... Which I hope isn?t the case for Messer Bruno, who I?d assume will be back next year ? with perhaps the Incredible Hulk (Nico Hulkenberg) as his teammate... Hey Nico, you?d be wise to eat your words and pull a Quick Nick (Heidfeld) who drove for free at Jordan Grand Prix one year just in order to stay in Formula 1! As just ask Christian Klien how hard it?s been to find a ride, eh? Not to mention has anybody seen ?Cowboy? I cannot say that I?ve been even remotely impressed by the woeful performance of the Virgin?s ? which is too bad since I like The Glockster... Ever since timo glock first drove in relief duty at Jordan Grand Prix way back in ?04. Substituting for Giorgio Pantano during a cash dispute at the Canadian GP where Glock scored his first two Grand Prix points with a fine seventh place finish...And I still don?t know nothing ?bout Messer di Grassi, apart from it too sounded like he was saying his goodbye ? not to mention the team has already announced the seat?s available for a mere 5.0m Euros! No. 24) T. Gypsy season ends

Monday was just a great day. I worked all morning, as is the case with every Monday, then just did little things all afternoon.

I read. I went out back of the motel, where the water laps up to a sandy area walled off from the water, and played my guitar, once in the afternoon and then at dusk. A guy I saw at MFB (motel's free breakfast) asked if I was the guy who was playing guitar last night. I told him yes, and he said, "You were good. Really good."

Hah. What does he know?

I was on Mojo Nixon's NASCAR show last night on Sirius XM. "Manifold Destiny." We talked about what sets Jimmie Johnson (and crew chief Chad Knaus) apart from the rest in NASCAR.

Mainly, though, I didn't think about NASCAR on Monday. Well, I mean, other than writing all the copy for "NASCAR This Week," our syndicated page that appears in newspapers across the U.S. and Canada. And a day-after column. And a blog.

I had my encounter with the little sea bird (see video blog here). I had a good supper. I read a few of the stories about Sunday's Ford 400 written by colleagues.

Remember: I didn't think that much about NASCAR. Who am I kidding? It takes over your life.

I needed Monday. It's been a while since I had "one of those days" that brought my temper up close to a boil. I didn't completely lose it, hence the notation "up close to a boil." Things piled up on me, though. I was detained in the lobby because I didn't have the proper sticker affixed to my NASCAR hard card. When I finally got to the press box, it was very hot and I discovered its location had been changed and its size greatly diminished. Because it was so boxed in on either side by luxury suites -- and because it was so narrow, and because there was a large column right in the middle -- the only place to see was on the front row, and until shortly before the race started, the sun was multiplying through the glass and causing that front row to sizzle a bit (not literally).

There were other aggravations but no need to waste excessive words here, lest I come across as just another spoiled journalist.

So I spent a good deal of the day pissed off and trying to control myself. It's not altogether a bad thing. I usually write best when mildly aggravated. The sarcasm bites more.

On Monday, though, I was happy, relaxed and unworried. The season was over (though I'm going to be very busy for at least the next week). I'd had a night to sleep on the frustration. The little bird gave me some perspective. Playing guitar is my refuge from the maddening world.

I finished off a book and stopped by a local bookstore to buy another. I had a nice conversation with the lady at the bookstore about literature. If I'm here (as in "staying in the Keys," as opposed to Miami), I guarantee I'll stop by her store again next year.
The three video blogs offer some evidence of the range of my moods. The first was shot in the Homestead-Miami Speedway infield. I'm really relaxed and content. The second was after all the pre-race frustrations. I'm talking to the air out on the stairwell, more for therapy than entertainment. The third was the next afternoon (Monday), when I felt as content and philosophical as some mystic. Or ascetic. Or some other word that ends with "-tic." I would think none was "lunatic."

One side of me wishes I had a few more days to clear my mind here in Key Largo. Another can't wait to get home.

I'll be co-hosting NASCAR shows on Sirius (NASCAR Channel 128) on Wednesday (11 a.m.-3 p.m.), Saturday (noon-3 p.m.) and Sunday (noon-3 p.m.).

I'm looking forward to Thanksgiving, my favorite holiday. As a general rule, Thanksgiving is all good. The family gets together and it's pleasant. Christmas can get petty. Or maybe it's just that I get tired of normal life.

I've been a gypsy too long.

NASCAR?s big, but not that big, here

Will Denny Hamlin join the Miami posse of Lebron James? The opposite is unlikely.

HOMESTEAD, Fla. – It’s all about the South down here. No drawls. No plantations (well, there is a city near here called Plantation). But there’s South Beach, and the geography is unmistakable. Homestead-Miami Speedway may not be Southern but it’s as south as the United States of America gets.

NASCAR takes its traveling show to most parts of the country, but it doesn’t get much glitzier than this. Juan Pablo Montoya held his annual South Beach gala – or soiree or extravaganza, or whatever – on Thursday night.

In other big news, Denny Hamlin met LeBron James.

“It was just at our hotel, basically,” said the Sprint Cup point leader. “One of the guys that I know, that works at the hotel, asked if I cared to meet him, and I said, ‘Of course. Sure.’ I just briefly talked to him for just a second. It really wasn’t anything too big. Obviously, he’s one of the most interesting guys of the past year, so it was good to experience that.”

Asked if the NBA star knew anything about NASCAR, Hamlin said not too much.

“He’s heard of it. I don’t know,” said Hamlin. “I really didn’t ask him too much about to be honest with you. I got to thinking, though, I was sitting there and looking around and the scene around him, and what-not, and I was thinking, why in the world would he leave Cleveland for this?”

It may have been a bit like the time Red Grange visited the White House. Grange was introduced to Pres. Calvin Coolidge, who was told, “This is Red Grange of the Chicago Bears,” and the president replied, “I’ve always enjoyed animal acts.”

NASCAR is known here. Every Chase has ended here, not to mention the seasons of 2002-03 before there was a Chase. NASCAR holds its grand finale in a city made famous at various times by Jackie Gleason, Tony Montana and Dan Marino. It’s going to take at least a Montoya championship to make NASCAR a household name.

Or maybe Hamlin can win the championship and thus earn a place in LeBron’s posse.

Maybe it?s a matter of winning, not losing

It’s a simple case of the Cinderella story versus the truth of who has the best damn car on the track.

AVONDALE, Ariz. – This Chase race is a bouncing ball. Each week. Back and forth.

Intangibles run rampant. Let’s see.

On Friday, Denny Hamlin was in breakout mode. His crew chief, Mike Ford, has supposedly gotten under the skin of Jimmie Johnson’s crew, which, by the way, wasn’t the same as it had been a week earlier.

On Monday, Johnson still trailed by 15 points, but it seemed as if it was time to get the cases of champagne ordered. Hamlin had played it a bit too safe by pitting near the end of the Kobalt Tools 500, apparently not realizing that most everyone else was going to try to conserve fuel and make it to the end, and more importantly, that most were going to succeed.

At Phoenix International Raceway, Hamlin snatched defeat from the jaws of victory, leaving him to wander aimlessly out of the track’s media center, muttering that he didn’t think he had done anything wrong.

Meanwhile, there was Kevin Harvick lurking, eyeing the two in front of him with the stare of a vulture waiting to snatch up the pieces.

But what if we stopped putting so much weight into the tangibles? What if the tangibles are really going to decide who wins this heated contest?

What if what happens just … happens?

If Johnson emerges next week as the champion, the prevailing view is going to be that Hamlin’s crew chief, Ford, spat on Superman’s (Johnson crew chief Chad Knaus) cape and got what was coming to him. If Hamlin wins it all, it’s going be because he kept a level head and didn’t let anyone get to him.

If Harvick wins, well, it’s going to require some alleged choking or bad luck by not one, but two. Thus will emerge the Cinderella story.

But maybe, just maybe, this championship is to be decided simply by which driver has the fastest car. Maybe no one’s going to choke. Maybe the attention should be justly slanted toward a tale of winning, not losing.

If so, few will notice. What’s between the ears trumps what’s under the hood.

NASCAR has a rock star ? and perhaps after a fifth straight championship for unsinkable Jimmie Johnson, the sport will realize it.

HOMESTEAD, Fla. ? NASCAR has a rock star ? and perhaps after a fifth straight championship for unsinkable Jimmie Johnson, the sport will realize it.
Johnson ran second to Carl Edwards in Sunday?s season-ending Ford 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway to secure the first come-from-behind title in his skein of five championships.
Edwards? victory was perfection. He led 190 of 267 laps in winning his second straight Sprint Cup race and the 18th of his career.

On second thought ?

Team owner Rick Hendrick and drivers with swapped crew chiefs: Mark Martin (who now has Lance McGrew), Dale Earnhardt (Steve Letarte), and Jeff Gordon (Alan Gustafson).

First, a preface. On Monday night, I was on Mojo Nixon’s Sirius NASCAR Channel show, “Manifold Destiny.” I noted that many Dale Earnhardt Jr. fans had been suggesting, no, demanding, that Earnhardt be given crew chief Chad Knaus, who assisted Jimmie Johnson in winning the last five Sprint Cup championships.

I said that, based on my knowledge of both men, Junior and Knaus wouldn’t get along for 15 minutes. I then said that I thought Steve Letarte, Jeff Gordon’s crew chief, would be a better match for Junior.

The next day Hendrick Motorsports announced that it was swapping the teams of the three drivers other than Johnson. Letarte moved to Earnhardt’s team. Lance McGrew moved to Mark Martin’s team, and Alan Gustafson moved to Gordon’s.

It looked as if I had had inside information. I hadn’t. It was just an observation that happened to occur the very next day. It made sense to me. I guess it made sense to Rick Hendrick, too. Skill is rewarding, but luck is more fun.

On Wednesday, I co-hosted another Sirius NASCAR (Ch. 128) show, “Trading Paint,” with Danny “Chocolate” Myers, who worked with Dale Earnhardt for years and is still affiliated with Richard Childress Racing.

On the day before, while driving, I had listened to some of the NASCAR Channel, just to see what everyone was talking about. Everyone was talking about the Hendrick moves and still were when Choc and I answered their calls and talked about them for most of four hours.

On Tuesday, while I was listening, almost everyone had been angry, particularly the fans of Earnhardt and Gordon.

On Wednesday, while I was talking to them and trying to answer their questions, most all of them had reconsidered.

The transition didn’t particularly surprise me. It’s not unusual for people to overreact on first impression, then think it through and come around. The near unanimity of the change is what surprised me.

The day before, it was the same show, Choc paired with his regular sidekick, Rick Benjamin. I was just substituting.

That made me the variable, I guess, but I don’t really think that had anything to do with it.

Superbikes ? Electric VS Gasoline

Finding more fuel efficient modes of transport has been at the top of the priority list for most manufacturers, who have been designing and building electric vehicles, and discovering new ways to power cars, so that their design is environmentally friendly. But it is not only cars that have seen innovative technology come their way, as electric superbikes have also been strutting their stuff on the racetrack. However, gasoline powered superbikes have never come up against electric superbikes and, as the latest electric superbike is too heavy to compete against other electric superbikes, it will be making history next year.

NASCAR highs and lows of 2010

Most improved driver: “Flame On” Harvick. Least improved auto manufacturer: Ford.

HIGH: Jimmie Johnson won a record fifth consecutive Sprint Cup championship, which is even more impressive in that no one else in the sport’s history as won more than three.

LOW: The exhortation of NASCAR vice president Robin Pemberton – “Have at it, boys” – proved to be emblematic of the season that followed. An on-track feud between drivers Carl Edwards and Brad Keselowski boiled over in both the Cup and Nationwide Series. No one was hurt, but the crashes were scary and obviously intentional.

* * *

HIGH: Denny Hamlin’s run for the championship was inspirational and heartbreaking. Hamlin persevered in spite of a knee injury that required surgery … while he continued to race. He led Johnson by 33 points with two races remaining – and won two more races -- but wound up losing the championship by 39.

LOW: Dale Earnhardt Jr. continued to struggle. Ninety-three races have passed since his most recent victory. He will begin his fourth season at Hendrick Motorsports with his third crew chief, Steve Letarte. (A fourth, Brian Whitesell, just took the reins for one race.) He finished 21st in the standings and collected only three top-five finishes.

* * *

HIGH: Another driver who didn’t qualify for the Chase won the season’s two most prestigious races. Jamie McMurray captured both the Daytona 500 and the Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis.

LOW: Upset at being criticized, NASCAR officials tried to fine two drivers, Hamlin and Ryan Newman, in secrecy. Naturally, word leaked out, leading some to wonder what else the ruling body was hiding.

* * *

HIGH: The season’s two races at Talladega Superspeedway produced a total of 175 lead changes. The individual numbers were 88 and 87, the two highest such totals in the sport’s history.

LOW: Two of the sport’s more dignified drivers, Jeff Gordon and Jeff Burton, exchanged blows after Burton inexplicably wrecked Gordon’s Chevy under a caution flag at Texas Motor Speedway on Nov. 7. It’s difficult to buy Burton’s explanation that he didn’t mean to do it on purpose.

* * *

HIGH: The Raybestos Rookie of the Year in the Camping World Truck Series, Austin Dillon, actually won two races.

LOW: The rookie of the year in Cup, Kevin Conway, never finished higher than 14th and was 35th in the point standings.

* * *

HIGH: The most improved performance came from Kevin Harvick, who improved his average finish from 19.9 in 2009 to 8.7 in 2010. Under the point system in place prior to 2004, Harvick would have finished the season with 295 points more than any other driver.

LOW: Even though three of its drivers made the Chase, and Edwards won the season’s final two races, Ford’s NASCAR program still had a disappointing year. Chevys won 18 Cup races, and Toyotas won 12. Fords won four, and Dodge’s one-team, three-car effort claimed two.

Wither Bachelart

So you say you wanna be a Rock Star, Err, an IndyCar Team Owner ? living the life ?O glitz ?N glamour, (?Money for NOTHIN? & Chicks for FREE...?) bein? the big Cheeze, making? all those decisions... Like wheres to place those just acquired sponsors ?Decle?s (Decals) on the nosecone in Gasoline Alley... Picking drivers, etc.As I just read the obvious ? according to Randy ?Where?s duh Beef? Bernard ? ?bout how naturally two ICS Team Owners weren?t happy over the leagues decision to dole out Contingency Funds to only the top 22-fulltime Indy Car Series participants vs. the current Top-24... Yuhs knows when the Indy Racing League, Err IndyCar shells out $1.3m per chassis for contesting the full season.Yet Eric Bachelart, who?s been running his own Minnowesqe Conquest Racing team for 15-years now, seems to always draw the short straw. Recall that it was Bachelart (amongst others) who?d just dropped a cool million a copy for the new Panoz DP01 in Champ Car just months prior to ?Ronnie? & ?Smiley-face? (Tony G. and Kevin K.) pulling off their landmark Merger, Err Takeover ? NO! I meant reunification... As Bachelart was stuck with some shiny new Panoz?s... Which if memory serves me correct? I believe was a faster racecar then those lovely Dallara Crapwagon?s of the day ? just sayin?; Oh Never Mind!Bernard?s latest policy change should actually be known as the Milkalicious ride-buyer denial plan, as Bachelart finished number 23 and Dale Coyne and His gIRL, Err Gal, the Wanderin? Milka finished P24... As in so much for participating for 30yrs in the sport, eh? We only Franchise the drivers weeze likes, although I DON?T know why there?s such a disdain over Milka Duno and her CITGO sponsorship... As the perennial ?King Hiro never got the black flag treatment ? not to mention the plethora of sketchy Backmarkers of both CART and the IRL. As who was Racin Garner and Dr. Jack Miller to name a few, not to mention those great Team Scandia Piloto?s, nor somebody named Lyn St James...Then again it?ll be great to see Milka towel slappin? DannaWhooze?s ARSE in ARCA right? And won?t it be funny seein? Milka entered in this year?s I500... I mean ar Yuhs tellin? me that Mr. Belskuis WON?T cash her entry cheque?

NASCAR This Week ends operations today

It's been a hoot, but we gotta scoot.

NASCAR This Week is ending operations on Monday, December 6, and will go offline on Dec. 17.

While traffic to the site has continued to grow since April 2008 when we came online, NASCAR This Week failed to meet its financial expectations.

We’d like to thank Monte for his generous permission to feed all his stories to this site. We still believe he’s the best NASCAR journalist out there, and wonder if the NASCAR heat we got last summer was due more to Monte’s voice than the few bucks we were making off advertising.

Keep giving ‘em hell, Monte!

Monte will continue to cover NASCAR. You can find his stories on the NASCAR page at the Gaston Gazette where he works, as well as his blog, also located on the Gaston Gazette website. Monte also posts blogs on his personal MySpace page, and he also maintains a music MySpace page where you can hear his songs and find out where he’s performing next. He also has a page on Facebook.

We also want to thank all of you for stopping by over the past few years to catch Monte’s latest, join in the comment conversation or just enjoying some NASCAR octane.

Please leave us a message of farewell if you care to in the comments section below.

For the next couple of weeks we’ll leave up some of Monte’s best stories from the season. We think they offer ample evidence of why you should continue to follow Monte where you can. As we said, we think he’s the best around.

Here’s to great racin’ in the years to come!
