Two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Dan Wheldon was killed following a crash Sunday during an IndyCar Series event at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
Wheldon was 33-years old.
Wheldon's car was involved in a fiery 15-car crash on the 11th lap of the event Sunday on the 1.5-mile oval. IndyCar Series officials made the decision not to restart the event.
Drivers participated in a five-lap salute to honor Wheldon hours after the fatal crash.
"IndyCar is sad to announce that Dan Wheldon passed away from unsurvivable injuries," read a statement from IndyCar CEO Randy Bernard. "Our thoughts and prayers are with Dan and his family. INDYCAR, its drivers and teams have decided to end the race."
